2025 Puzzle 7: “Stuffed Cabbage” Solution

This month’s MMMM, “Stuffed Cabbage,” challenged solvers to find a famous rock-and-roll artist. The five theme entries all have the name of a foreign currency embedded in them, with a catch: There’s an extraneous letter “stuffed” inside. Below are the themers with the currencies in bold and the “stuffed” letters in blue:

PUCKER ONE’S LIPS (KRONE)
PRIMORDIAL SOUP (RIAL)
FRAYED NERVES (YEN)
EXTRAORDINAIRE (DINAR)
BEFORE AND AFTER (RAND)

The letters within each currency – or money – spell out E-D-D-I-E, yielding this month’s meta answer, Eddie Money. A hint to both the meta mechanism and answer was provided by the term “cabbage” in the title, which is slang for “money.”

Meta Song:

We came up with a different take on Eddie Money’s classic “Take Me Home Tonight” using the same crew as last month. Enjoy!

Selected Solver Comments:

Jwaan   Big assist from the title this month—“cabbage” had me looking for currencies almost immediately. Might’ve played a lot harder without that!

LCRUZPA   Not until the light went off and cabbage was cash, did I solve the meta. It took me an hour to realize that. Geez, I was only a banker for over 30 years.

BethA   Thanks for the puzzle! It made me laugh when I realized the last name.

Qmark   Loved the puzzle! Have his awesome debut album in my collection… bought it when it first came out in 1977!

Laurabrarian   My favorite EDDIE MONEY story: I was in a Lyft late at night and “Take Me Home Tonight” came on the radio. The driver and I were singing at the tops of our lungs. We both rolled down the windows, and at a stoplight, right on cue, the folks in another car started singing too … just like Ronnie sang.

Alternative Music Clues:

Pete Mitchell suggests cluing GOES BY as [“As Time ___”], BAG as [“Papa’s Got a Brand New ___”], and RYE as [Drink that Don McLean rhymed with “pie”].

Redhead64 suggests cluing XRAY as [___ Spex (“The Day the World Turned Day-Glo” band)], BAG as [“Brown Paper ___” (VMA-nominated music video by Roni Size & Reprazent)], and ODENSE as [Danish city where singer-songwriter Trine Dyrholm was born].

pbfrommn suggests cluing PIG as [“Big man, ___ man / Ha ha, charade you are” (Pink Floyd lyric)].

Evan suggests cluing LOOMPA as [“Oompa-___, doompadee-doo! / I’ve got another puzzle for you!” (lyric from “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory”)], BAG as [Pipe opening?], and PIG as [“___ on Her Head” (children’s song by Laurie Berkner that mentions a certain farm animal appearing on her head)].

Groaners:

Zoltar   We got our money’s worth out of that one.

Mikey G   Take me home to your puzzles tonight!

tylersyoung   No tRoUBLE at all

Allan Patterson   I couldn’t solve it at work, so I told myself “Baby Hold On; Take Me Home Tonight”. So I took Two Tickets To Paradise, and after a little Shakin’…Think I’m In Love!

Trout Almondine   If you’d made the puzzle easy you could have called it Easy Money.

Jennybean   Maybe I’m a Fool, but I saw an answer to this one right away!

rvkal   In retrospect, it probably shouldn’t have been too difficult, but I’ve always had a hard time with Money.
