The eleventh contest puzzle of 2021 is now published – you can find it here. The meta for this puzzle is a song from the ’70s.

Enter your solution to the meta on the right side of this page, where you can also rate the puzzle and/or leave a comment. The submission deadline is 11pm Sunday, November 7. Please enter your screen name each time you submit to have it count for the Leaderboard.

I created a Halloween puzzle suite targeted at kids 10+ (like mine). Adults can enjoy it too. You can access it here.

This puzzle is the hardest of the year. In order to give more solvers a chance to get the meta, I will be offering a hint starting Friday, November 5, at noon ET (three days from now). To receive the hint, submit as you would normally, except with the answer “HINT PLEASE.” Hints will be emailed starting Friday at noon.

If you solve the meta after getting the hint, resubmit as you would normally. You will still get credit, but with fewer points, and you won’t be eligible for the monthly mug drawing.

Still stumped?  The website will be updated with a hint to the meta solution Sunday night at 11pm, right after the contest closes.

The 2021 mega-meta is an old pop standard. Guessing the mega-meta early earns you lots of bonus points. If you want to submit a guess for the mega-meta, use the appropriate form on the right sidebar.

The 2021 red herring is a song by Alessia Cara. Guessing the red herring is worth 5 extra points. This year the red herring has its own submission form, and it will work like other metas in that you only get one chance to submit.

2021 MMMM notes:

Musical taste and experience vary. You may not have heard of some of the meta songs or bands, but they will always be gettable via an online search once you figure out what’s going on in the puzzle.

The first few metas will start off pretty easy. Difficulty will grow throughout the year, with a slight pullback in December.

You can enter your solution to the mega-meta in the box at the right at any time during the year, and the scoring is the same as last year: The earlier you solve the mega-meta, the more bonus points you get. Full details can be found in the Contest Rules.

Because the reward is so large for getting the mega-meta before the final puzzle, there may be some tricks designed to throw solvers off the track. Consider yourself warned. Click here (SPOILER ALERT) for the write-up on last year’s mega-meta (and here for the 2019 mega-meta).

Grand Prize Eligibility:  In order to be eligible for the grand prize drawing this year you will need to correctly solve the mega-meta before the mega-meta reveal puzzle comes out on on December 21, and solve at least eight other metas.
